The Mid-Autumn Festival is approaching, marking the traditional harvest celebration in Chinese culture. It is held on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese lunisolar calendar, when the full moon appears at night.

This festival expresses gratitude to the moon and celebrates the bountiful harvest of crops. The festival is typically celebrated by baking and sharing mooncakes, which symbolise the completeness and unity of families.

History of the Mid-Autumn Festival

The festival originated over 2,000 years ago as a post-autumn harvest celebration dedicated to thanking the gods. It is believed to have first emerged during the Song dynasty, evolving from the tradition of moon worship. Over time, legends associated with the full moon became closely linked to the festival. During the reign of Emperor Tai of the Northern Song dynasty, Mid-Autumn Day was officially designated as the 15th day of the 8th month in the lunar calendar.

Significance of the Festival

The full moon is regarded as a symbol of reunion, which is why the Mid-Autumn Festival is also called the Reunion Festival. Mooncakes, round like the full moon, symbolise the unity and togetherness that occur during the festival. This festival is deeply connected to the moon because it appears brightest and fullest at this time of year. Traditionally, the Mid-Autumn Festival was a popular occasion for weddings, as it was believed that the moon goddess would bless couples with happiness and harmony.

The Celebrations of the Mid-Autumn Festival

As one of the most popular festivals, the Mid-Autumn Festival is marked by vibrant celebrations, festivities, and activities. It is a time when families come together, as the festival’s core meaning centres around reunion and togetherness. A key tradition is the sharing of mooncakes, which come in a variety of flavours, both sweet and savoury, such as the double-yolk lotus paste variety. Gift-giving and moon appreciation are also important customs, allowing people to celebrate the season and the end of the harvest while enjoying the beauty of the full moon.
